Chris Rhoades had already watched the regular seasons come and go without killing the buck he wanted. Then Pennsylvania’s flintlock season gave him one more slow, cold chance in an Erie County cornfield.

He waited for the right wind, slipped into a well-hidden blind, and watched does and smaller bucks feed before the big 10-pointer finally stepped into the corn near last light. At 55 yards, he put iron sights on the shoulder and let the smoke roll.

Slip in like you expect the buck to already be there

Late-season deer do not forgive careless entries. By January, every old buck has survived trucks, stands, bad wind, and hunters walking the same easy routes. The best move is to treat the walk in like part of the hunt, not the commute.

𐂂 Use the ugly route if it keeps you hidden, even if it adds ten minutes.

𐂂 Stop before the last 100 yards and check the wind again, not once at the truck.

𐂂 If the blind or stand is wrong for that wind, do not talk yourself into it. Back out and keep the spot clean.
