Dale Baer was hunting near Portage, Manitoba, with his buddy Cory Peters, watching hay fields that bordered thick Canadian bush. The first two afternoons gave him looks, but not the right shot. On the third afternoon, the buck finally stepped out about 15 minutes before dark.

Baer stopped the moving buck with a grunt and fired from behind the cover of a large hay bale. The shot was 285 yards. The buck went into thick cover, and instead of pushing the track in poor light, they backed out and returned the next morning.

Let the last light do the moving

Late-season bucks often wait until the field feels safe. If you get impatient and start shifting, glassing too hard, or climbing out early, you can ruin the only window that matters. The last 20 minutes are not dead time. They are the hunt.
