Andrew McKean warned his friend Derrick Ratcliff that eastern Montana might not have much to give. EHD had hammered whitetails, mule deer numbers were down, and a long, pressured season had made mature bucks harder to find.

Derrick came anyway. After watching deer move out of Missouri River bottoms and into the adobe hills, the hunt turned into a problem of landmarks, wind, cutbanks, and patience. They used a rangefinder and a map to relocate the right draw, then found the buck bedded in the prairie cuts.

Mark the feature before you make the stalk

Prairie mule deer country can make every cutbank look like the last one. Before you move, pick the exact landmark the buck used, range it, mark it, and build the stalk around that point. Wandering into the right general drainage is how hunters turn a bedded buck into a rumor.

𐂂 Use the map to approach from a side the deer cannot see or smell.

𐂂 When the country starts looking the same, slow down. That is usually where mistakes begin.
