Big Buck Journal
The buck, the why, and the gear
One Buck. One Kid. Murphy’s Choice.

An old deer camp leader, a patterned buck, and the morning he proved the best trophy is not always the one you tag yourself.

A good buck can fill a tag. A right choice can build a hunter.

Murphy had spent weeks patterning a fine buck around a clear-cut, acorns, an old logging road, and a red oak stand he believed would seal the deal. He knew the deer’s route well enough to feel like opening morning was already written.

Then the buck appeared, headed straight away, and Murphy had the shot in his hands. Instead of dropping the hammer, he lowered the rifle and let the deer keep walking toward a boy on his first hunt. The boy killed the buck, and Murphy later called that rack the one he was most proud of.

𐂂 Field fact

Murphy had taken dozens of bucks, but the rack he valued most came from the deer he chose not to shoot.

Put the new hunter where the deer makes sense

The best first-hunt stand is not always the most aggressive one. It is the stand with a simple entry, a clear lane, a safe backstop, and enough deer movement to teach patience without turning the morning into confusion.

𐂂 Choose a route the hunter can reach quietly without rushing.

𐂂 Walk through the shooting lane, no-shoot zones, and recovery plan before daylight.

𐂂 If a good deer is headed toward them, let the hunt teach the lesson. That is how deer camp keeps going.

Dale's note: A safe hunter is a calm hunter. If you are putting somebody young or new in a stand, a lightweight harness is the kind of gear that matters before the buck ever shows.

Dale's note: Good glass helps you slow the whole camp down. Before anyone gets excited, you can judge the deer, confirm the lane, and keep a young hunter focused on the right moment.

The Last Word 𐂂

Deer camp lasts because somebody always decides the story is bigger than their own tag. Sometimes the buck you let walk becomes the one that keeps another hunter coming back for life.

Stay patient, stay quiet.
